CHAPTER 32

ELLIOT COULDN’T REMEMBER a longer shift. Was that how the entire week would go before he returned to Orchard Grove?

It wasn’t like him. He’d gone on exactly two dates since Amy died. One was with her sister who was as different from Amy as Seattle was from Orchard Grove. They’d ended the night with no hard feelings but with the very clear understanding that they’d never go out and preferably never talk to each other again.

The second date was someone his foster sister Tiff set him up with, some girlfriend of hers who lived nearby. It wasn’t technically a disaster, but he dropped her off at home right after dinner, and neither of them mentioned getting together again.

The night Amy died, he’d thought it was cruel for her to mention his finding happiness in a world she was leaving. How could he ever experience joy again? But now he realized her words were a blessing. It was all right to move on.

He didn’t have to feel guilty.

He thought about Amy, wondering if she and Ruby would have liked each other. His fiancée was quiet, sensitive. Elliot got the feeling Ruby was far more loud and outgoing, maybe even brash.

Had his tastes changed?

They didn’t look alike either. Amy had been blond. Thin, even before the cancer hit.

Ruby had dark hair, nearly black. Feminine curves, a strong presence.

Would the two have liked each other? Maybe. But they certainly wouldn’t have been soulmates.

Had he made a mistake? No. This was the right thing. The right time. Ruby was the first person to ever ask him out. Apparently, scrawny boys with asthma aren’t first pickings for homecoming or prom, and by the time Elliot hit college he was too busy studying to care much about dating.

Dating. The word sounded weird. He almost felt too old for it. Not that he expected to remain single his entire life. Then again, when he made the drive all the way out to Orchard Grove to meet Grandma Lucy, he hadn’t planned to return the next week for a woman.

A very pretty woman with a large smile and lips that he remembered being so soft ...

No, he didn’t want to think about that. Their first romantic encounter was a mistake. This was a time for a new beginning.

A fresh start.

If he didn’t die of impatience before the weekend came.
